You could have a hidden treasure in your wallet if you own this piece worth £4,000. One coin collector revealed details on the special piece – and issued a little warning
There are many ways to check whether you own a rare coin in your collection. It might be a one penny which is the “rarest in UK history” or a £10 banknote that could sell for £3,600, whatever it is, check your wallets immediately.
These days you can see detail for yourself by looking at the rarity, condition and historical significance. And now it’s not just coins from this century which are turning heads on social media, but also the kind from 130 years ago. Instagram user @CoinCollectingWizard, who boasts 30,700 followers, revealed the 1883 six pence that is “super rare”.
In a post, he told fans: “Have you seen a coin worth over 130 years old worth £4,000. It is this British six pence from 1883.
“First off, the 1883 from over 100 years ago which makes it super rare and difficult to have in decent condition, now here’s the catch.”
He claimed one factor could be that you need to find it in ‘extra fine condition’ as that’s what ‘makes it a whopping £4,000 today’.
The collector added: “That’s because most of these are worn down and barely survived over the years.
“Condition is everything, if you’ve got one in extra fine condition, you’re holding a piece of history that’s worth big money.”
Discussing the history of the coin, he revealed to fans it’s a 1883 six pence from the Late Victorian era which was minted in the reign of Queen Victoria.
“It’s a lovely coin to add to your collection and with a lot of these pre-decimal coins is made from 92.5% silver that’s holding silver value too,” he concluded.
“Think you’ve got one, you might have a hidden treasure in your collection.”
A good reason why this coin is special to find and worth a lot it because high grade cupro-nickel coins are becoming harder to find.
The obverse of the coin features a young portrait of Queen Victoria with ribbons in her hair.
Meanwhile, the reverse displays the words “SIX PENCE” beneath a royal crown, surrounded by an oak wreath tied with a bow.
