One type of operation has become hugely popular for men in the UK

A surgeon says there has been a surge in men seeking chest reductions. Mr Ramachandran Prasad a Consultant Breast Oncoplastic and Aesthetic Surgeon at Pall Mall Medical, says there is a trend of men undergoing surgery to reduce and reshape their chests.

Known medically as gynecomastia surgery or reduction mammaplasty for gynecomastia, this procedure reduces the size of male breasts, often caused by an excess of breast tissue. “Recently, there has been a rise in men seeking overall improvements to the chest, from the reduction of fatty tissues – known as gynecomastia – to contouring surgery,” Mr Prasad said.

“As a surgeon, the need for male chest reduction is best determined through a careful examination. This helps us choose the right surgical approach based on each person’s specific needs.”

“Some men have what’s called false gynecomastia, which is an excess of fat in the chest,” he explained. “This can often be treated with liposuction alone. However, others may have true gynecomastia, where there’s extra breast tissue that needs to be removed with surgery.”

“In many cases, men have a mix of both, so we create a treatment plan that addresses both fat and breast tissue to get the best results,” added the surgeon. While implants remain an option for larger pectorals, they are less common in the UK. Instead, more male patients are requesting chest reductions.

Searches for ‘chest reduction’ in the UK alone have risen by 33 per cent from 2019 to 2024, and searches for ‘pec contouring’ have increased by 26 per cent.

“Men are increasingly becoming more body-aware and accepting of going under the knife for enhancements,” said Mr Prasad. “With techniques improving minimal scarring, it’s apparent that more males than ever are open to surgical procedures.”

“Men are increasingly drawn to methods that use their own biology to achieve the desired aesthetic, moving away from the artificial look associated with implants,” he added.
