Police evacuated a block of flats on a quiet suburban street following a call about “suspicious items”, with one man arrested as investigators make urgent inquiries. Greater Manchester Police were called to a home at Capitol Court on School Lane in Didsbury today.

Police said officers located “several bags containing substances”, prompting a precautionary evacuation of some residents in nearby properties. While police are yet to confirm exactly what was found in the bags, they have arrested one man as they prepare to start assessing what was recovered.

A spokesperson for GMP told Manchester Evening News officers were “making enquiries” at a property following the call about suspicious items earlier this morning at around 10am. The force said there is no wider threat to the public.

The spokesperson said: “We’re making enquiries at a property on School Lane in Didsbury after a call about suspicious items at the property.

“Officers in attendance have located several bags containing substances which have been seized. As a precaution, nearby occupants have left their properties temporarily. There is no wider threat to the public.

“A 32-year-old man has been arrested pending an assessment into the contents of the items discovered. He is in police custody. A scene remains in place while the investigation takes place.”

One local resident said she saw a massive emergency presence at the scene earlier today, with fire services having turned up on the quiet street alongside police. She said she saw “a tactical aid unit, a crime scene investigation van, a fire welfare van, a fire engine and multiple police vehicles”.

Another neighbour said they believed police had turned up at the scene from around 10am, stating: “I just woke up and saw them, but I didn’t know what happened.”

One resident told the MEN the scene was “a bit odd” but that it “seems to have calmed down now”, with police saying cordons remained set up inside the block of flats.

Another resident said he had just returned from holiday when he noticed several police vans stationed on School Lane.
