Sutton Park death: Tragedy as body of teenage boy is pulled out of lake

By staff11 July 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

West Midlands Police and West Midlands Fire Service led a huge rescue operation in Sutton Park in Sutton Coldfield after a teenage boy got into difficulty in Powell’s Pool

The body of a teenage boy has been pulled from a lake.

The youngster went missing in Powell’s Pool, a lake at Sutton Park in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, last night. Following a huge rescue operation, which went on for several hours, the teenage was discovered dead.

Specialist officers scoured Sutton Park, one of the largest urban parks in the United Kingdom, after the teenager was reported missing. West Midlands Police say the death is not being treated as suspicious at this time and the force is liaising with the coroner.

Speaking late last night, a West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “The body of a teenage boy has been recovered from a pool in Sutton Park, Birmingham, this evening. West Midlands Police are supporting the family of the boy at this tragic time.

“Extensive efforts by all emergency services were carried out following the boy going missing in the water just after 6pm. Specialist teams were deployed from fire and rescue, ambulance colleagues, and Birmingham City Council colleagues.”

The spokesperson continued: “Sadly this has resulted in the boy’s body being found and our thoughts are with his family at this time. His death is not being treated as suspicious at this time and we are liaising with the coroner.”

Two fear crews – one from Sutton Coldfield and another from Solihull, West Midlands – assisted in the extensive operation last night. West Midlands Fire Service said they arrived at just after 6pm when the boy went missing.

Powell’s Pool is a large expanse of water on the edge of the park, which is a popular beauty spot. Sutton Park is typically busy with families during hot weather, and last night the mercury hit 32C in the wider West Midlands patch.

The whole of Powell’s Pool was cordoned off with police tape last night. Emergency services were seen going in and out of the water throughout the evening.

Speaking late last night from the scene, a reporter for Birmingham Live, our sister title, said: “It’s now dark here in Sutton Park. Emergency service activity continues. A boat crew can just about be seen on the water while those officers on land are now using torches.” He added a restaurant which overlooks Powell’s Pool remained open despite the huge operation last night.

No further details about the boy, including his exact age and where he was from, have been disclosed at this stage. West Midlands Police are likely to share further information at a later time.

It comes after the body of a paddleboarder was found in a lake last week. Police continue to investigate the death of 48-year-old Sunshine “Sunny” Stewart, an advocate for human rights.
