Taiwo Awoniyi ‘OUT of induced coma and recovering well’ after undergoing urgent surgery

By staff14 May 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Nottingham Forest Taiwo Awoniyi is now out of his induced coma having undergone emergency surgery on an abdominal injury he suffered when colliding with a post against Leicester on Sunday

Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi is out of his induced coma and is recovering well. The forward underwent emergency surgery to help recover from an abdominal injury he sustained after a sickening collision with a post against Leicester City on Sunday.

The Nigerian had a procedure on Monday night, but his condition wasn’t thought to be life threatening and he was placed into a coma to help restrict his movement and regulate his heart rate.

The Mail Online now report that the second part of the procedure was completed on Wednesday, with Awoniyi’s condition being monitored in hospital. He is awake after the surgery and is recovering with his family.

Forest issued an angry statement in which they claimed that the seriousness of Awoniyi’s injury proved why owner Evangelos Marinakis stormed on to the pitch after the match. They took aim at the “fake news” which suggested he confronted boss Nuno Espirito Santo after two dropped points against the Foxes.

Many – including pundit Gary Neville – suggested that the Greek businessman was fuming that the team’s Champions League hopes were damaged, but instead he was angered that his injured player was allowed to continue.

The club said in a statement: “At Nottingham Forest, this principle is not just policy for us; it is the deeply held belief and conviction of our owner. To Evangelos Marinakis, this isn’t just a football club – it’s family – and he instils that message in all of us.

“That is why he was so personally and emotionally invested in the situation that unfolded at the City Ground on Sunday. His reaction was one of deep care, responsibility, and emotional investment in one of our own. In moments like that he demonstrates his leadership, not just through words, but through action and presence.

They also added: “His deep frustration at seeing our player lying on the ground in severe pain – something no one with genuine care could ignore – triggered him to go onto the pitch.”

Forest are set to launch an internal investigation into how the incident was handled ny their medical team, with Marinakis seeking to work out just what happened in the incident.
