Tech giant taking its own app store off Android devices – how it affects you

By staff20 February 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

In a letter sent to developers, the tech giant announced the store would be closed on August 20.

Android users will no longer have access to Amazon’s app store from later this year. In a letter sent to developers, the tech giant announced the store would be closed on August 20.

Developers have been stopped from submitting new apps for Android devices immediately, although they are allowed to update existing applications. The store will still be available on Amazon devices, such as Fire Tablets.

The Amazon Coins program – a virtual currency used to purchase apps, games, and in-app items from the Amazon app store – will also end on August 20. Coins are no longer available for sale, and anyone who still holds coins on August 20 will be refunded, TechCrunch reports.

A message on a support page reads: “Starting August 20, 2025, you will no longer have access to the Amazon Appstore on your Android device. We will also be discontinuing the Amazon Coins program on August 20, 2025. As of Feb 20, 2025, Amazon Coins are no longer available for purchase.”

It adds: “Starting August 20, 2025, any apps downloaded from the Amazon Appstore will not be guaranteed to operate on Android devices. Amazon Appstore will continue to be available elsewhere, including on Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices.”

The Amazon Appstore launched in 2011 as a location for Android users to download apps. As of 2012 it has been the primary app store for Kindle Fire tablets.

In 2011 Apple filed a lawsuit against Amazon, claiming use of the term ‘app store’ constituted copyright infringement. It dropped the case in 2013.
