A teenager has died and two young women were injured in a horror amusement park accident just two days after the park opened its doors to the public. The tragedy unfolded in Itaipava, a district of the city of Petropolis in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the early hours of Saturday, May 3.

Joao Victor Souza Trindade da Silva, 19, was riding the “Expresso do Amor” ride at Crazy Park, a travelling amusement park set up at the Parque Municipal Prefeito Paulo Rattes, when he was violently thrown from the attraction and suffered multiple fractures. A video circulated online, which the Mirror has chosen not to include, shows one of the victims being carried off the ride with bloodstained clothing and placed into a stretcher before being taken into an ambulance.

He was taken to the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in Itaipava but died shortly afterwards from his injuries. Two young women riding with him were also hurt.

One was treated and discharged at the scene, while the other was taken to the same medical facility, treated for bruises and discharged during the night. The incident happened just two days after Expo Petropolis had launched on May 1, though organisers were quick to distance themselves from Crazy Park, claiming there was no affiliation between the two.

Itaipava City Hall revoked the operating licence for Crazy Park on the morning after the accident and said all emergency services had been delivered by crews already at the site.

The Civil Police have opened an investigation into the tragedy, with crime scene investigators attending during the night to gather evidence and interview witnesses.

Joao Victor was the son of Carlos Eduardo Trindade da Silva, an employee of the Municipal Department of Education. He was remembered by family and friends as a kind young man, loved for his dedication and example in life.

Crazy Park said in a statement that first aid teams were mobilised immediately and that all victims received “quick and effective” care. The park added that it is offering support to the families of those involved and that it complies with all safety protocols as required by law.

Man people have taken to social media to express their sadness at what happened. “Very sad, he goes out to have fun and doesn’t come back, how is the family now, without their treasure which is their children, Jesus in his infinite kindness gives this family, Faith, strength and courage…,” wrote one person on Facebook.

Another person said: “My condolences to everyone, very sad.”
