The child, named as Amanda Max Teles da Silva , has still not been found after she apparently mistook the open cover for a puddle during flooding which hid the depth of the hole
The tragic moment a 12-year-old girl fell into an open manhole during a flood has been captured on camera.
The child, who has still not been found, apparently mistook the open cover for a puddle during flooding which hid the depth of the hole.
The chilling footage shows the girl, dressed in school uniform, crossing a flooded road in Dias D’Avila, in the Brazilian state of Bahia, on Wednesday afternoon.
The girl, named as Amanda Max Teles da Silva is seen clutching a yellow umbrella in the clip before she suddenly disappears from sight as she falls into the open manhole. Amanda was reportedly on her way home from school when the horrific incident occurred, sparking a massive search for the youngster.
Military firefighters have been scouring the area for her but sadly there has been no sign so far. City hall authorities said that rescuers would keep combing the stormwater drainage system in a bid to find Amanda.
The latest reports, as of Thursday, said Amanda had still not been found. More than 80 professionals have been mobilised in the search for the missing girl. Experts are said to be using helicopters, drones and sniffer dogs in an attempt to find her.
The closest the searchers have come to finding Amanda came when her backpack was recovered from a wooded area about two kilometres from where she disappeared.
One of the firefighters involved in the operation said: “We are focused on identifying the exact path that the current could have taken to increase the chances of finding her as soon as possible.” The search is expected to resume in the Imbassai River, which flows through Dias D’Avila.
