Tesco meal deal price spike a ‘national outrage’ as even MPs left furious

An MP has demanded “Parliament to be recalled” after it was revealed Tesco Meal Deal prices will soar to a shocking £4.25 – a substantial £3.85 even with a Clubcard.

Liberal Democrat MP for Maidenhead, Joshua Reynolds, has branded the price rise a “national outrage” on the social media platform X.

The MP’s remarks followed a devastated Tesco shopper posting: “Discovering that a Tesco meal deal will be £3.85 *with* a Clubcard from Thursday was truly devastating.”

Numerous social media users echoed the MP’s anger over the meal deal price surge, with one person demanding the matter be raised in parliament. The social media user declared: “This deserves to be mentioned in the PMQs.”

Another worried Tesco customer commented: “This is one of the very few times the Lib Dems have called for the recall of parliament, I can get behind.”

The price change follows an earlier increase in August 2024, when the beloved lunchtime option jumped from £3.40 to £3.60 for Clubcard holders, and from £3.90 to £4 for non-Clubcard shoppers.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “Our meal deal remains great value and the ideal way to grab lunch on-the-go at just £3.85 for a main, snack and drink when bought with a Clubcard.”

They added that, “with more than 20m possible combinations, the Tesco meal deal has got something for every taste, from a classic Chicken Club Sandwich to Tesco Korean Style Chicken Dragon Rolls”.

Nevertheless, the price changes have left some Tesco shoppers disgruntled, with several even threatening they will be “boycotting” the meal deal option following the cost hike.

A social media user claimed the meal deals were “no longer deals anymore,” writing: “Dear Tesco, please stop increasing the meal deal prices. They’re not meal deals anymore, just meals. Thank you, a broke hamster.”

Another wrote: “Take me back to the days of the £3 Tesco meal deal, what an absolute scam this country has become.”

Best Tesco meal deal combination for your money

The Daily Star previously ventured out to find the best value-for-money meal deal pairing of them all. Reporter Ashley Pemberton headed down to Tesco to identify the combination that delivered the greatest savings based on the products’ individual costs.

Ashley’s meal deal went for the Sushi, which is priced at £3 on its own. Other £3 alternatives included a range of chicken wraps.

Ashley admitted: “I did eye up the chicken wraps, but I’d just been to the gym and felt healthy and the Sushi had less calories.” Alongside the wrap Ashley grabbed a £2 protein bar plus a regular latte to complete his Tesco meal.

Had Ashley’s products been purchased for their combined price, he’d have paid £8.10, saving him a significant £4.50.
