Tesco recall popular meal over health danger as shoppers warned ‘do not eat’

The popular ready-meal has been wiped from the supermarket’s shelves with customers warned against eating it, due to an undeclared ingredient having been discovered

Tesco has issued an urgent recall over a popular meal over a dangerous potential health risk. The supermarket’s Stir Fry Tikka Chicken has been removed from shelves due to an undeclared egg mustard that was not mentioned on the ingredients list on the label.

This poses a serious potential health risk for those with an allergy to either or both egg and mustard – triggering a food recall to be launched through the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

The undeclared egg mustard ingredients are in the sauce sachet wich is attached to the product, the listing added. Tesco warned customers not to eat the meal if they had it and to return the chicken dish to any Tesco store for a full refund. Affected batches of the 650g Tesco Stir Fry Tikka Chicken are ones with a use-by date of 7 September, 2025.

You do not require a receipt to gain the refund, the recall warning stated. Tesco apologised for “any inconvenience caused” by the recall, adding that “no other Tesco products” were affected.

Food items may sometimes be recalled if there is “a problem with the product that means it should not be sold”, the FSA said. It added: “Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk.

“When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert.” This comes after Tesco issued an urgent recall after a beauty product was found to carry a safety risk. Some batches of the Tesco Kind & Pure Facial Cleansing Wipes have been found to contain Pluralibacter gergoviae.

The bacterium has been linked to respiratory diseases, urinary tract infections, eye infections, and sepsis. While infections in healthy people are rare it can cause severe infections in people with weakened immune systems, chronic illnesses, or those undergoing surgical procedures.

Issuing the recall the Product Safety Alerts, Reports and Recalls said: “The affected batches of these products present a microbiological risk as testing has detected the presence of Pluralibacter gergoviae. This makes the products potentially unsafe to use, particularly for vulnerable users or users with a compromised skin barrier.

“The product does not meet the requirements of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 or the Cosmetic Products Enforcement Regulations 2013.” It added: “The products have been recalled from end users by Tesco.”
