Tesco urges UK households buying bananas to store them in unlikely kitchen place

The life shelf of a banana varies depending on how it’s stored. To avoid them becoming overripe sooner rather than later, Tesco has shared a useful tip for them to be enjoyed at a later date

Shoppers feeling the pinch of the cost-of-living crisis will be dismayed to find their bananas brown and mushy just days after buying them.

But bosses at Tesco have shared a life-changing hack to store bananas, extending their prime ripeness, by keeping them in an unlikely kitchen place. In a huge bid to also reduce food wastage, the supermarket has shared some useful tips, helping shoppers to prolong the shelf life of bananas and avoid them from becoming brown or mushy, reported Wales Online. By freezing bananas, shoppers can enjoy them at another time.

According to RESET Media, Each year in the UK, approximately 3.2 billion bananas are wasted, with an average of around 115 bananas per household. One of the main reasons is due to overripening. They’re also one of the most wasted fresh foods in the country.

They said: “Freezers are the most efficient when they are full, so make the most of the space to prevent food waste and have ingredients ready to go. From milk and cheese to veg and rice, your freezer can do it all!”

When it comes to ripened bananas, it’s recommended to peel them before putting them in the freezer, either as a whole or cut in slices. Once you’re ready to use them, you can simply remove them from the freezer and add them on smoothies, or as a base for homemade ice cream.

They’re also good for other recipes such as banana bread, as it offers a natural sweetness without the need to add unnecessary sugar. They’re so many things they can be used for, you just have to be creative!

Freezing bananas doesn’t only help extend the shelf life, but it also preserves their nutrients by also reducing waste. Another tip is to separate the bananas before freezing them by wrapping them individually to avoid the fruits getting stuck together.

This simple hack can save shoppers money, allowing them to buy bananas in bulk and avoid them from going bad before they can be enjoyed.

So next time you buy a bunch of bananas and think that you won’t be eating them all in time, don’t think twice, and store them in the freezer to reserve them for next time – thanks to Tesco’s hack to keep them fresh for longer. It’s a small change that can make a difference over time in how households manage the amount of food waste at home.
