Tesco has issued an urgent recall after a beauty product was found to carry a safety risk. Some batches of the Tesco Kind & Pure Facial Cleansing Wipes have been found to contain Pluralibacter gergoviae.

The bacterium has been linked to respiratory diseases, urinary tract infections, eye infections, and sepsis. While infections in healthy people are rare it can cause severe infections in people with weakened immune systems, chronic illnesses, or those undergoing surgical procedures.

Issuing the recall the Product Safety Alerts, Reports and Recalls said: “The affected batches of these products present a microbiological risk as testing has detected the presence of Pluralibacter gergoviae. This makes the products potentially unsafe to use, particularly for vulnerable users or users with a compromised skin barrier.

“The product does not meet the requirements of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 or the Cosmetic Products Enforcement Regulations 2013.” It added: “The products have been recalled from end users by Tesco.”

It added: “If you have purchased an affected product, please do not use it. Return your product to any Tesco store for a full refund. No receipt is required.

“For further information, or for assistance in finding your nearest Tesco store, please access the Tesco recall site.”

There are two affected types of wipe. These are the Tesco Kind & Pure 25 Facial Cleansing Wipes and the Tesco Kind & Pure Radiant Facial Cleansing Wipes Vitamin C 25 Pack 159g. The affected batch numbers are:

According to the Tesco site the recall is a “precautionary measure”. It said: “Tesco is recalling various Tesco Kind & Pure Facial Cleansing Wipes due to unsatisfactory microbiological testing and detecting the presence of Pluralibacter gergoviae, which can make these products potentially unsafe for use.”

“For more information, please visit our contact us page. No other Tesco products are affected by this recall. “Alternatively, you can also contact Tesco Customer Services: UK: 0800 505 555 or ROI: 1800 248 123.”
