A Tesco employee has asked “why are they like this” after a recent interaction with a customer in store. Hundreds of thousands of people work for Tesco in the UK alone, with the retailer having thousands of stores across the country.

In a recent post on Reddit, one member of staff shared their annoyance after closing their till while at work. The Tesco worker wrote: “Customer started loading shopping after I closed my till. Why are they like this? Gate closed, sign on the end saying ‘checkout is closing’.”

The employee went on to explain that they had locked the till and signed off, before adding: “As I’m walking back to make sure it’s all locked up a man has picked up the sign, looked at it, threw it to one side and started unpacking his shopping, and then forced the gate open, the alarm is now going off and he’s having ago at me asked me why the alarm is going off.”

The worker said that when he told the man his checkout was closed, he was told he was “lazy”. The Reddit post continues: “[He then] walked off to the next till and was told she was shutting too. He went bright red, left his shopping and walked out the store.

“Doing this he passed three empty checkouts. And eight empty self serve tills.”

Others have been quick to reply, as one said: “Glad the customer was embarrassed in the end. Cannot stand that ‘I’m a customer so I get/do what I like’ attitude”. A second wrote: “I started working part time at a supermarket when I was 15 and honestly I never knew how rude and entitled people could be until I started this job”.

A third added: “I quit my job because customers kept doing this” and a fourth said: “The customer is never right”.

Tesco was approached for comment.
