The 2p coin hack that removes limescale from shower head in seconds

By staff13 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Limescale can be a real pain in the bathroom, but one cleaning fan has shared a simple 2p coin hack that removes it from your shower head in seconds – and it’s been a hit with others

Limescale can be a proper nightmare in the bathroom, stubbornly sticking to surfaces and frequently making itself at home in your shower head. Not only does it look ghastly, but it also hampers water flow by clogging up the exit holes.

Whilst many turn to white vinegar for natural descaling, cleaning fanatic Lianne Wood encountered a problem with her particularly dreadful limescale issue. Following numerous suggestions from fellow cleaning enthusiasts, Lianne Wood found that a straightforward 2p coin could tackle the job in seconds, reports the Express.

Over on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook group, Lianne enthusiastically shared: “So, I’ve lived in my house for a long time now! The shower head on our taps does not work properly. Because of the thick limescale, water doesn’t spray properly.”

She added: “I’ve tried cleaning it over the years, but gave up. I tried using vinegar, but it wouldn’t remove the shower head limescale completely. That is, until tonight, thanks to seeing the 2p hack. It worked well on the limescale in 15 seconds. It’s so much better!”.

The Mrs Hinch devotee even displayed before-and-after pictures of her shower head.

In the original photo, the fixture was swamped with black limescale; after the 2p treatment, it looked pristine.

So what makes the 2p coin so brilliant against limescale?

It’s thought that the copper in the coin chemically reacts with limescale, prompting it to break down. Shelley Law, another member of the group, mirrored Lianne’s success story, revealing her impressive results using a 2p coin on both her shower head and taps.

She revealed: “For many years, I’ve tried different lotions and potions to solve the limescale problem on these taps and shower heads.

“I joined this group and saw a few mentions of a 2p coin, I was sceptical, I thought ‘well I’ve tried everything else, what have I got to lose’? We have a winner. The limescale is all gone now.”

Members of the group responded to her post with their own experiences. Heather McKee said: “I tried the 2p tip; it’s amazing. I’m descaling everything now.”

Jadejemma added: “Amazing, isn’t it? I was like you and super sceptical, but now I look around for any signs of limescale anywhere just to do some more.”

AJ WB commented: “I was sceptical too, but it really does work! The only problem I have now is that the limescale was basically holding the 20-year-old tap together, and now it’s dripping constantly.”
