The Buggles’ legend Trevor Horn shocks fans with unexpected appearance with Sophie Grey

By staff26 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Music legend Trevor Horn thrilled fans with an unexpected performance alongside Sophie Grey during her recent set in Kentish Town over the weekend

Legendary producer and Buggles co-founder Trevor Horn stunned fans on Friday by taking to the stage for a surprise performance. The star joined rising musician Sophie Grey during her gig at O2 Forum Kentish Town in London for an impromptu performance.

The duo performed Video Killed the Radio Star at the event, much to the crowd’s delight. Many took to social media to praise to unexpected duet.

One user on X, formerly known as Twitter, gushed: “Just saw Trevor Horn come on stage to play one song (Video Killed the Radio Star) with Sting’s support act at Kentish Town Forum. Great effort!”

The one-off collaboration saw Horn and Sophie reimagine the iconic hit together. They blended the upcoming star’s Retro Electro sound with the song’s timeless new-wave spirit. And it was clear it marked a standout moment in her impressive set.

The performance followed the release of her new version of the track. It’s said to have a futuristic, slow-burning synth production and nostalgic flair.

Sophie previously said of the tune: “Video Killed the Radio Star is a timeless song as history repeats itself and electronics rise again.”

The classically-trained pianist and keyboardist studied piano performance at Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. She was mentored by songwriter and GRAMMY-award-nominated Dr. Patrice Rushen.

Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles was the first music video played on MTV in August 1981. At the time, on August 1, a voice boomed: “Ladies and gentlemen…rock and roll”.

It was then that the first video played. And unsurprisingly to some, it was the hit tune by The Buggles. However, the tune wasn’t brand new and had in fact already been out for two years.

The band came about when Horn met his future Buggles partner Geoff Downes, when the pair played in English singer Tina Charles’ band in the late 70s. Their tune reached the top of the charts when it was released in 1979.

The pair went on to join Yes for their Drama album. Then, Horn produced the band’s Grammy Award-winning 90125 album in 1983.

He later went on to co-produce 1987’s Big Generator and 2011’s Fly From Here. While Horn’s surprise inclusion on Friday night stunned fans, it comes as he gets ready to go on his own short tour.

He will be performing three concerts at the end of the year. The gigs will see him travel to Newcastle, Manchester and London.

Sophie, meanwhile, will be continuing her own tour with further dates in London. She recently opened up for the likes of Shaggy and Marianas Trench.
