Gen Z, the trend-setting and fitness orientated generation, have now added a new running trend to their list. As the colder months settle in along with the rich autumnal scenery, fitness enthusiasts are ready to lock in after a summer of fun.
Instead of the urban running routes, they have now swapped out those city breaks for rural ‘run-cations’. The new travel trend is subbing out pavements and crossings for scenic views, countryside atmosphere and mingling with friends.
New research from Airbnb and Strava finds that Gen Z runners have grown tired of built-up running locations. The study shows that three-quarters have planned or are thinking to go on a rural run-cation.

This October, Airbnb and Strava have joined forces and are showcasing some of the UK’s most amazing, rural and unforgettable running destinations. The locations are matched with beautiful places to stay in as well as nearby running routes. Some of the local bakeries even offer complimentary sweet bakes to indulge in.
Although, just under half of young runners run in cities and towns, the majority (56%) admit that they are bored or do not feel inspired when running these urban routes. This is down to multiple reasons: lack of scenic views, crowded areas, and pollution.
Evelina Jarbin, Senior Director of Strava for Business says that the way “people are being active and socialising has evolved – people are looking for new experiences and ways to connect with their community, with exercise and exploration at the heart of it all.”
Therefore, it comes as no shock that three in five are looking forward to or considering a countryside running experience. For many of the runners, a ‘run-cation’ is about shutting off from the hustle and bustle and connecting with nature and people.
Using the Maps tab on the Strava app, there are lots of real run routes to find that has been generated by the Strava community. You can even opt for a post-run reward at the local bakeries, which 72% of runners said they love.
