The Simpsons set for new movie after 20 years as fans react to Bart’s ‘promise’

By staff29 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Fans of The Simpsons have reacted to the news the animated comedy is set for it’s second movie release almost two decades on from the first instalment

The Simpsons is set for another movie release almost two decades on from the first release. The iconic animation will hit the big screen once again, following the successful release in 2007.

The news was announced in a social media statement, saying the new movie adaptation is set for release on July 23, 2027. While plot details haven’t been shared, a feature version of the long-running Matt Groening-created Fox animated series has fans excited.

20th Century Studios confirmed the news on their Instagram account. They shared a snap of Homer Simpson with a pink donut covered with sprinkles in the shape of the number 2. The picture caption read: “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”

On Twitter/X one user wrote: “Bart kept his promise… The new “SIMPSONS” movie is slated for July 23, 2027, filling the date vacated by a Marvel Studios movie.

“The second Simpsons movie is Disney’s second animated feature aimed at older audiences.”

On the Instagram announcement, fans went into more detail about the meaning, coming from one of Bart’s iconic school board scribbles. “They kept their promise and did not wait 20 years to make a sequel. They took 19 years and 363 days,” one user wrote.

Another penned: “I will not wait 20 years to make another movie”

“First movie came out July 27, 2007. 2nd one is July 23, 2027. They were THIS CLOSE to making it 20 years!”

“Is it too early to mark my calendar?,” asked another, while another copied Mr Burns’ catchphrase, saying: “Mmm… another Simpson movie… Excellent.”

The first movie came after 400 episodes of the famous yellow family had graced the small screen in a timespan of over 20 years. While staunch fans of the show were quick to praise the output, critics met the movie with mixed reviews.

“It gets three stars by the skin of its teeth thanks to a smattering of goodish gags but, given the anticipation – not to mention the hype – surrounding The Simpsons Movie, this has to be the most disappointing film of the year,” wrote the Mirror’s critic at the time.

They even said Homer had predicted the movie’s downfall at the start when the character said: “I can’t believe we’re paying to see something we did on TV for free! If you ask me, everyone in the cinema is a giant sucker!”

With the animation returning to theatres, showrunner Matt Selman recently admitted that Variety over the summer: “The streaming platforms have helped the series remain popular.

“Now instead of the kids watching it on local TV in the afternoon, they can just watch it all, all the time, all day, all forever.”
