Behavioural psychologist Jo Hemmings says that the key to nailing a job interview or first date could be all down to your shoes.
From the poised allure of a classic pump to the playful charm of a block heel, your choice of shoes can speak volumes about your personality according to behavioural psychologist, Jo Hemmings, who suggests that the secret to acing a job interview or first date might just lie in your footwear.
A recent study commissioned by retailer Deichmann revealed that it takes less than 60 seconds to form an opinion about someone and a staggering 93% of the 2,000 people surveyed believe first impressions are vital. Factors such as shoe cleanliness, their appropriateness for the occasion, and how well they match the outfit are assessed when you meet someone for the first time.
Jo disclosed that our shoe selection can provide subtle yet revealing psychological insights, “We unconsciously or consciously make snap judgments about personality, wealth, habits, and even romantic potential based on what someone wears on their feet,” she shared.
“Sometimes, for women, an otherwise well-dressed man can give the ick factor just by the choice of his footwear. We can’t help but check out someone’s shoes, to judge whether they are ‘our kind of person’ and of course that varies from individual to individual,” she further explained.
The study also underscored some persistent shoe stereotypes, such as the perception that trainer-wearers are laid-back (45%) and that donning smart shoes signifies success (36%).
Psychologist Hemmings added: “People make the assumption that all high heel wearers aren’t very intelligent and that brainy people only wear comfortable flats. As a psychologist, I can assure those people that we can put these misconceptions to bed.”
Simon Wilson, director at Deichmann which is promising to offer the lowest price for shoes on the high street – or they will price match or refund the difference, said: “We strive to offer as much choice as possible to cater for every shoe lover – with statement heels for bold and confident types to slide-on sandals for laid-back personalities.”
