Thomas Tuchel delivers Ollie Watkins injury update after England star left in agony

By staff10 October 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

England and Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins collided heavily with a goalpost during the Three Lions’ dominant 3-0 win against Wales at Wembley on Thursday evening

England boss Thomas Tuchel believes Ollie Watkins has avoided injury despite his painful collision with a goalpost. The Aston Villa star thumped into the upright during the first-half of the Three Lions dominant victory against Wales on Thursday evening.

Watkins, 29, was immediately given treatment by England medical staff. And while he was able to return to the pitch, the striker never quite managed to recover fully and was replaced by Marcus Rashford at half-time.

Boss Tuchel does not believe that Watkins has picked up an issue in what is positive news for his side and Aston Villa. Speaking after England’s win, the German coach said: “He’s ok.

“It was a clear goal normally for him but unfortunately he saw the ball too late and couldn’t score and crashed into the post. It was very, very painful, but as I understood it now it’s only painful so no harm done.”

Watkins’ injury was a tough end to what had been a productive evening for the forward. The striker had earlier scored his sixth goal for his country as he tapped home from close range.

Also on the scoresheet was Villa teammate Morgan Rogers, who opened his account for England after just three minutes against Wales. Asked where his debut England goal ranks among his career highlights, Rogers said: “Right at the top.

“It’s a proud moment to do it at home too in a home nation derby. A dream come true. The quality of players we have with people here and not here, you can never be too comfortable, or else people will take your role.”

On Rogers’ performance, Tuchel added: “He is what he is. He is a number 10 and he is competing for his place. He is in a good way.

“We are ready for any team effort. Serbia was the next example of teamwork. We created a lot of chances. We could use Harry [Kane] all the time, but we need to play without Harry and Jude – the guys are injured. I think we played an excellent first half.”

Both Watkins and Rogers will both be aiming to be fit and firing for England’s next game. The Three Lions are next back in action on Tuesday evening as they take on Latvia in a World Cup qualifier.

Tuchel’s side are already in an excellent position to qualify for the tournament. They sit top of Group K after winning each of their five qualifying games so far.
