Thousands of drivers face having speed limit ‘permanently’ reduced in England

By staff26 February 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

The A47 will see 20 new speed cameras installed to help crackdown on dangerous driving between Peterborough and Kings Lynn – with fines of £100 for those caught breaking the limit

Motorists in East England could be shifting gears down as speed limits across the region are looking at a ‘permanent’ slowdown – with those flouting the law facing hefty £100 fines.

Along the notorious A47, notorious for dangerous driving, 20 new cameras are set to be installing, policing the stretch between Peterborough and Kings Lynn as part of a major crackdown on bad driving.

National Highways has made the call for “permanent” speed limit cuts over several sections of this dicey drive, with most 60mph areas being lowered to a more sedate 50mph. Six specific sections along the A47 are set for these new slower speeds.

The stretch between Welland Road roundabout and the Oversley Lodge roundabout will see speeds reduced from 60mph to 50mph. Similar reductions from 60mph to 50mph will be applied between Thorney New Cut roundabout and Thorney Toll, as well as from Guyhirn to Wisbech.

Through Thorney Toll Village, the limit will drop more significantly from 60mph to 40mph. The section from Thorney Toll to Guyhirn will also change from 60mph to 50mph. And between Shoreboat Roundabout and Pullover roundabout will be reduced from 60mph to 50mph, reports Birmingham Live.

Martin Fellows, National Highways regional director, said: “Safety is, and will always be, our number one priority, and we understand how important improved safety is to those who use this route as well as those who live nearby.”

A £6m safety revamp to the A47 between King’s Lynn and Peterborough will bring 20 new speed cameras in an effort to curb the number of accidents. A Highways Agency spokesperson said: “Our work has identified sections of the A47 where we believe safety improvements can be made.

“These changes to the speed limit aim to reduce the frequency and severity of collisions which helps keep traffic flowing and creates safer roads for everyone.”
