If you’ve ever dreamt of strolling into your garden and picking fresh fruit for your breakfast, it’s not an unattainable dream. In fact, there are several fruits that you can plant right now and have them ready to eat by the summer.

According to realsimple.com, numerous berry plants will grow quickly and be ready to eat in a matter of weeks with the right care. If you’re worried that you’ve missed your planting window, don’t fret as there are a few shortcuts you can take early on.

Some berry plants don’t bear fruits in the first year, so experts suggest considering buying an established plant if you want a fantastic summer fruit salad this year.

Strawberries

Strawberries are a British classic and thrive very well in the UK. Besides their delicious taste, they also look stunning in the garden with their delightful white flowers, according to the Express.

They can be planted in a patch in your garden but are equally happy in containers and hanging baskets.

Strawberries should be planted between 12 to 18 inches apart in well-drained soil that needs to be kept moist. Within 60 to 90 days they will be bearing fruit.

Raspberries

If you’re after a tasty harvest of these sweet and tart berries, it’s best to start planting as soon as possible.

Raspberries, while still considered fast-growing plants, can take one to two years to begin bearing fruit.

However, a solution for this is to plant an already-established bush in your garden to get fruit faster.

Raspberry bushes can reach an impressive six feet in height, so ensure you have plenty of space in your garden.

If you’re short on space but still fancy these berries, they can be grown in pots, although they won’t grow quite as large.

They prefer rich, well-draining and slightly acidic soil and require full sun. Regular watering is also essential.

Blackberries

These tough perennial plants grow quickly and thrive in the UK. Most bushes will bear fruit within the first year of planting, making it a brilliant idea to start planting now for berries at the earliest opportunity.

They like well-draining soil and need regular watering, particularly during their growth phase.

They are happy in large pots as long as they receive sunlight and can also be trailed up trellises, adding a magical touch to your garden.
