A tourist has been found dead in a popular holiday spot with a number of substances discovered in his room.

The death of the 36-year-old man in the Soi Ta-iad hotel in Phuket is not being treated as suspicious, police in Thailand have said. Officers added no signs of assault were found on the man’s body and that sleeping pills, Viagra, marijuana and alcohol were all located in the room.

Testing is underway, but initial police suggestions indicate the substances may have contributed to the man’s death. Police are awaiting the result of a toxicology report, and are also questioning members of the staff at the hotel, as well as reviewing CCTV footage.

The man was discovered motionless on his bed by staff at around 2:30pm local time on Wednesday. Emergency services were rushed to the hotel after the discovery was made.

Following his death, the body of the man, reported to be from Australia, was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a post-mortem examination. An investigation is still ongoing, according to recent reports, and the local Chalong Police has informed the Australian Embassy.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said to it is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian man who died in Phuket.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” the department said. “Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment.”

It comes after a British family’s holiday ended in tragedy after a loving dad was found dead in water while on a boat trip near Marmaris in Turkey. John Nelson, from Arbroath in Scotland, was on vacation with his son Josh and Josh’s girlfriend Sharon Stuart when he died on July 31 off the coast of Turnuc.

Sailors from other boats pulled the 47-year-old from the water and passed him into the care of paramedics and the Coastguard, but sadly nothing could be done to save him.

Paying tribute to his dad online, Josh wrote: “While we were away on a family holiday, my dad’s life was tragically taken in an accident at sea. It’s a loss that has shaken my whole world and one I’m still struggling to put into words.

“My dad was my role model, my biggest supporter and my best friend. We shared so many laughs, deep conversations and special moments together.

“Over the last few years, I watched him transform his health, overcome many obstacles and push through some of life’s biggest struggles. He came out stronger, happier and more full of life than ever before. He truly cherished every day he was given.”
