Tourists issued major flood warning as three people dead in holiday hotspot

Bulgaria has been hit by a wrath of floods which has killed at least three people. The Navy has been deployed as people desperately try to find their loved ones who have been swept into the sea

Holidaymakers who’ve made plans to travel to a European Union resort have been warned about deadly floods which have taken the lives of at least three people.

Bulgaria has been hit with devastating scenes in the seaside resort of Burgas Province. Shocking footage emerged online of the state of the holiday hotspot as flooding wrecked havoc across several villages. Southeastern Bulgaria and the Black Sea coast have experienced disastrous conditions, sparking a state of emergency to be declared.

Minister Daniel Mitov confirmed the three fatalities and said that one man was killed in a building basement after water caved through. The other two people were rescuers who were responding to alerts, he said. Emergency services have ramped up their search to locate missing people, with the Navy being called in for help.

Sadly, some people may never be recovered as the floods swept away cars and caravans into the sea, reports BTA. Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov commented: “We are monitoring the situation. If the Ministry of Interior makes a request to us, we are ready to send additional forces.”

The army has sent two boats with rescue teams to assist those in the flooded areas. Heavy rains are forecast for the region in the next 24 hours. More than 10 fire trucks have been deployed in the wider Black Sea region, including Elenite, to help people in flooded areas, Bulgaria’s NOVA TV reported quoting a regional official.

Footage showed water sweeping through the streets of Elenite and a car half covered with water. Elsewhere in Europe, a major alert was issued across popular Spanish hotspots earlier this week. Party destination Ibiza, Formentera and Valencia were plagued with flooding due to torrential rain.

Holidaymakers heading overseas were urged to be careful after forecasters announced a red weather alert. The chaotic weather caused water to pour through the ceiling of Ibiza airport, disrupting the baggage security areas. Cars were spotted submerged as they attempted to escape flood water in other parts of the country.

Similar scenes can also be found over in Greece with adored spots Corfu, Oiniades and Aitoliko in Aitoloakarnania being named as a few places that have taken a hit. Some residents were left unable to leave their homes after becoming trapped inside due to the excess water.
