This one ingredient, which you most likely already have in your kitchen cupboard, is perfect for making your towels feel soft and just like new
The sensation of a plush new towel is unparalleled, but unfortunately, that cosy feeling doesn’t tend to last.
After numerous uses and countless wash cycles, our towels can end up feeling rigid and more abrasive than ever. This is due to the continuous use of detergent and fabric softeners gradually wearing down the fibres.
However, while it’s inevitable for our towels to lose their fresh-out-of-the-shop feel, there’s a straightforward method to revive the cosy sensation of a towel, and it all boils down to using one common ingredient that you probably already have in your kitchen. But before you utilise this kitchen essential, it’s crucial that you’re washing your towels correctly.

This means separating them from the rest of your laundry as lint from other fabrics can accumulate on your towel over time, causing them to become dull. You should also avoid overloading your machine.
Another vital tip is to “go easy” on the detergent as too much will make it hard to remove during the rinse cycle, and like the lint from other fabrics, it will build up over time and contribute to the stiffness of your towels.
Now, for the top tip, according to The Secret Linen Store: adding vinegar. This natural ingredient, which is a treasure when it comes to cleaning, will also work wonders on your towel by restoring its softness and absorbency, reports the Express.
They explained: “If your towels are very stiff and scratchy, try adding around 250ml of vinegar to a wash along with your laundry liquid. Add it to the washing machine drum just before you load and set the cycle going.
“Don’t worry – it won’t make your washing smell like a bag of chips as the scent dissipates during the washing process.”
The company also recommends hanging your towels outside to dry following a wash, before putting them in for a brief 20-minute tumble dry on a cool setting. It added: “This will help agitate the fibres, stopping them from sticking together, which will result in softer towels.”
If you’re more concerned with your towels smelling fresh for longer, then consider adding a fabric conditioner sheet to the mix. Simply add a conditioner sheet into the washing machine drum along with your usual detergent – no fabric conditioner needed.
Once you’ve hung up your laundry to dry, your entire home will be filled with a delightful aroma. What’s more, these scents linger for a week or even longer, which is quite uncommon, especially when it comes to towels.
