Scorched gardens have left many fretting over their parched lawns this summer, but fear not – green-fingered gurus over at The Grass People have come to the rescue with some top turf tips.
Their experts said: “It’s not easy to keep your lawn in top shape during summer as higher temperatures and less rainfall take their toll. It’s normal for grass to become wilted, patchy and brown during a heatwave as it goes into its dormant state, but all is not lost.
“The first step recommended would be to rake the surface and remove any dead grass.”
They further suggested taking a pitchfork to aerate the soil for better ventilation, and don’t skimp on overseeding your lawn with a generous spread of seeds fit for the purpose.
And don’t forget, come cooler weather, it’s time to fertilise those greens.
The specialists added: “Summer months often see spells of high temperatures and reduced rainfall, which can have a negative impact on lawns.”
This browning and wilting, they assure, is merely the grass bunkering down until the rain returns; a perfectly normal survival tactic, reports the Express.
But homeowners can lend a hand by ensuring their thirsty lawns are watered early in the morning or late at night when the sun won’t scorch the moisture away.
Alternatively, you could buy an oscillating timed sprinkler to help keep the lawn hydrated throughout the day.
