Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk committed his future to the club earlier this week but there is still no news on whether or not Trent Alexander-Arnold will follow suit
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future may be up in the air amid speculation linking him with a lucrative free transfer to Real Madrid, but that hasn’t stopped the Liverpool star from endorsing Virgil van Dijk’s decision to extend his stay at Anfield.
The Reds captain, 33, followed Mohamed Salah in committing his future to the Premier League’s runaway leaders this week, bringing to an end months of transfer talk and speculation. Unsurprisingly, the news went down a storm with fans when the defender’s contract extension was confirmed on Thursday.
Liverpool players also reacted positively to the news, with plenty of first-team stars interacting with a social media post from the Dutchman speaking about his new deal. And eagle-eyed fans have spotted that Alexander-Arnold is among a host of first-team stars who have liked Van Dijk’s post on Instagram.
While Alexander-Arnold has given Van Dijk the proverbial thumbs up after signing on at Liverpool, he has yet to give any sort of indication that he will follow in his captain’s footsteps.

It was claimed last month that the England star has, in fact, already agreed to join Real Madrid this summer when his current deal expires. The Spanish giants have been courting Alexander-Arnold for months and, in turn, he has been free to speak with interested clubs from overseas since January.
Fans could be left waiting until the end of the season for an official update on Alexander-Arnold’s future, particularly given Arne Slot’s side are now just two wins away from the Premier League title.
With Alexander-Arnold expected to move on, an ankle injury suffered by the defender last month sparked fears that he may not feature for the club again. But speaking ahead of Sunday’s trip to relegation-threatened Leicester City, Slot revealed that Alexander-Arnold was in contention to return to the bench – but he reiterated there was no news on a new contract for the right-back.

“No, I think you would be surprised if I answered differently to the rest of the season. It is for hours the same answer: we don’t talk about these things when they are not done and they are not.
“Trent is coming back from injury and trained with us this week, he has shown his commitment and he shows me what a player he is when he is on a pitch and how much he works hard to be back with the team and the fans of LFC, everyone who watches football knows he is an incredible full-back for this club, so let’s see what the future brings.
“Trent is not ready to start but if things go well today and tomorrow, he might – might – be on the bench. First session with the team was Weds, so not able to start but let’s see if he can join us, would be nice if he is with us.”
