Two dead after plane smashes to ground in fiery crash seconds after take off

Onlookers watched in horror as a plane took off from Paramillo airport in Venezuela before flipping in the air and crashing onto the runway in a ball of flames

Moment plane veers to one side seconds after take-off

Two men have been killed after a plane began to flip as it after took off and landed on a wing before exploding into flames in front of horrified onlookers.

People watching the light aircraft could be overheard screaming before trying to run to safety as the pilot lost control of the plane which ended up almost upside down before hitting the tarmac. The tragedy occurred just before 10am local time yesterday at Paramillo Aerodrome, an airport serving the Venezuelan city of San Cristobal in the country’s mountainous western region.

The victims were identified as pilot Jose Antonio Bortone Terife, 50, and co-pilot Juan Maldonado, 47, as investigators launched a probe into the accident. Initial speculation about the cause focused on a possible tyre explosion although accident investigators will also look at whether pilot error played a part.

The fire that engulfed the Piper Cheyenne 1 plane, said to have logistical links with the Venezuelan government, left it completely gutted.

The National Institute of Civil Aviation of Venezuela, the country’s civil aviation authority, said in a statement: “At 9.52am local time on Wednesday October 23 an aircraft type PAY1, registration YV1443, taking off from Paramillo Airport, located in the state of Tachira, crashed during take-off.

“The corresponding protocols were immediately activated, and the airport’s aeronautical fire brigade responded to the accident. Unfortunately, the two crew members on board were killed. The Civil Aviation Accident Investigation Board was activated, as required by the Venezuelan State, in order to determine the causes of the accident.”

EC Charter, which lists Mr Bortone as one of its pilots, said he had 30 years experience and 10,300 hours flying time and came from a family which was passionate about aviation. He said in his online profile: “Since I was a child, I have been fascinated by fighter planes.

“Although I did not have the opportunity to join the Venezuelan Air Force, my passion for aviation did not fade. My grandfather, who was a pilot for Avensa for 30 years, and my uncles, who instilled in me a love of flying, were my greatest inspiration.

‘Having gained extensive experience flying various types of aircraft and working for different companies in the sector. I am proud of my professional career and of being able to pursue my passion for aviation.”

His company said in a tribute to the experienced pilot on its Instagram site: “Jose Antonio was an exceptional pilot whose legacy will be remember always for his dedication, professionalism and deep commitment to our company.

“Those who had the privilege to know him talked about his great human quality, his charisma and happiness at all times, and the fact he was a great friend and exemplary father and husband. At these moments of deep sadness, we extend our more sincere and heartfelt condolences to his wife and children and other relatives and loved ones.

“Rest in peace, dear friend. Keep on flying high. We will remember you always.” Gloria Santana, paying tribute to the other man killed, said: “A great professional teacher who was passionate about what he did has today been lost to the world. Heaven has gained a great man. Rest in peace my dear teacher Juan.”
