Conor McGregor made a surprise appearance for his Black Forge football team in Dublin this weekend, with the UFC fighter featuring their 1-1 draw against Harding FC
UFC star Conor McGregor turned out for his pub’s football team in a United Churches Football League (UCFL) Premier Division clash against Harding FC on Saturday.
McGregor wore the number 11 shirt for Black Forge FC, who are named after the pub he owns in Dublin called the Black Forge Inn. The 36-year-old appeared to line up on the left wing and the game ended as a 1-1 draw.
The UCFL is one of several amateur leagues operating in Dublin and McGregor’s side currently sit second in the table with four wins from seven games. Before the match, McGregor posted an image of a pair of purple Nike boots on social media with the caption: “Today we ball”.
He followed that up by adding: “I break jaws with my shoulder, and noses. I get the ball any pitch, any where. Moses”. Footage has since gone viral on social media, with one clip showing ‘the Notorious’ put in a thumping challenge on an opposition player.
Although Black Forge FC might be an amateur side, McGregor did recently get his hands on the prestigious FAI Cup after his cousin Warren Davis won the trophy with Drogheda United.
McGregor shared a snap on Instagram of him posing with the trophy alongside his cousin at the Black Forge Inn, but he initally congratulated Davis for winning the tournament with Dundalk instead of Drogheda.
He wrote: “Yup the gaf, @theblackforgeinn! FAI cup in the house! Congrats my cuz @warrend02 on winning the fai trophy with @dundalkfc! That’s two of my cousins now who have won this prestigious Irish Football League trophy. One with Bohs, Keith, and one with Dundalk, Warren!! Tremendous! It’s in the blood!”
He later corrected the post and Drogheda have since issued a statement distancing themselves from McGregor after he lost a civil sexual assault case in November. McGregor has been ordered to pay Nikita Hand £200,000 after he was found liable of assaulting the woman, who accused him of raping her in a Dublin hotel six years ago.
McGregor has since stated that he will be appealing the decision, but the Irishman has been dropped by a number of sponsors following the ruling. And Drogheda said in a statement: “A social media post has been brought to our attention today regarding the FAI Cup.
“Those pictured are a close relation to one of our first team players, who like all the other players had custody of the cup to celebrate with their families at different intervals. Drogheda United do not associate ourselves with the individual who made the social media post in any way, or with any unauthorised brands mentioned.”
