UK beach ‘not for the faint-hearted’ but has crystal clear waters

Pedn Vounder Beach in the Cornish village of St Levan is famed for its crystal-clear water and almost-white sand — but it’s not for the faint-hearted or the prudish

Pedn Vounder Beach, nestled in the Cornish village of St Levan, is often hailed as one of Cornwall’s most beautiful beaches. This stunning bay, located a stone’s throw from Land’s End, boasts crystal-clear water and almost-white sand.

At low tide, you can amble to Pedn Vounder from the nearby Porthcurno beach; however, ensure you return before the tide rolls in, or you’ll be left with the cliff path, which is not for the faint-hearted.

In recent years, this beach has graced our screens on the BBC adaptation of Poldark, doubling as the fictional Nampara Cove.

When it’s not featuring on telly, Pedn Vounder is an ideal choice for those seeking a secluded slice of seaside, though be warned, according to Cornwall Beaches, it’s a favourite spot for naturists.

The unique moniker of Pedn Vounder hails from the old Cornish language, with ‘pedn’ translating to ‘end’, and ‘vounder’ meaning ‘of the lane. ‘.

Visitors who have had the pleasure of visiting Pedn Vounder have left glowing reviews on TripAdvisor, with one stating: “This beach cove really is gorgeous, the water is crystal clear and a stunning turquoise colour, you wouldn’t believe it’s in the UK!

“Only about a mile from the nearest parking lot, but it definitely isn’t a trip for the faint-hearted. It is a very steep hike/climb down to get onto the beach, virtually rock climbing.

“Make sure you take all the essentials too, as there is nothing around once you get there.”

While a second said: “The most gorgeous beach I have ever visited! So quiet despite going in July on a sunny day. We checked tide times and wore appropriate clothing before hand which is a definite must if wanting to visit this beach.

“Access would be impossible if not in correct footwear or not physically fit. About a mile from car park down steep cliff. Had a lovely day here enjoying the sun. Dog friendly too which was lovely.”

Meanwhile, a third passionately shared: “Anyone saying this place is anything other than divine is not telling the truth.

“It IS tricky to walk down to, and you do need to be very careful. Lots of nudists (July) so not for the anyone prudish. Possibly best bathing beach ……. in the world??”
