Described as a village with a city inside, there’s no denying that Salisbury is a pretty special place. The city offers a charming mix of historic buildings, gorgeous walks and a laidback vibe
Oxford and Chester may be charming, but there’s a smaller city that offers equal beauty and history with far fewer tourists.
This quaint city invites you to meander from cosy coffee shop to welcoming pub, while taking in stunning medieval buildings, the tallest Cathedral in Britain and beautiful countryside. Nestled in the tranquil county of Wiltshire, Salisbury, the seventh smallest city in England, boasts all the historic charm of a larger city, making it perfect for a weekend staycation.
A visit to the iconic cathedral is a must. Not only does it have the tallest spire in the UK at 123 metres high, but it also houses one of the four surviving copies of the Magna Carta inside the Chapter House.
If the weather allows, you can climb the famous spire for breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, and don’t forget to marvel at the stained glass windows once you’re back on solid ground.
Just a short 17-minute drive from the city, you’ll find one of the world’s most famous prehistoric monuments. The enigmatic standing stones of Stonehenge, shrouded in folklore, date back around 5,000 years, and whether you buy into the theories or not, it would be a shame to miss it while you’re here.
At the Salisbury Museum, you can even explore archaeological finds from nearby areas like Stonehenge and Old Sarum, reports the Express. Once you’ve soaked up all the history, a tranquil stroll or cycle along the River Avon is a must.
The green countryside provides the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle. You can also venture into the nearby New Forest national park on foot, bike or even horseback, where ponies and donkeys roam freely.
If you fancy a change of scenery, head to the coastal town of Lymington. Here, you can watch sailors manoeuvre their impressive yachts through the marina while enjoying some deliciously hot fish and chips.
