UK heatwave: See how your area affected on interactive map as temperatures soar

The Mirror’s interactive weather map reveals where is expected to experience an official heatwave this week – check it to see whether you’ll need to stock up on sun cream

This summer’s fourth heatwave is underway with many areas of England are expected to see temperatures rise above 30C this week.

A total of 234 local areas are in heatwave conditions today according to the official definition set by the Met Office – and you can see if your area is one of them by searching on the interactive map below.

The heatwave is impacting almost all of England apart from areas in the North East and Cumbria, plus coastal areas around the east and south. Only four areas of Wales are expected to see heatwave conditions – Denbighshire, Wrexham, Monmouthshire and Caerphilly – according to the official Met Office definition. It comes after a mum was left ‘traumatised’ after a dog walker pushes her in canal as she cycles to work.

And although temperatures in Scotland and Northern Ireland could go over 25C on Wednesday, the hot weather there is not expected to last long enough for an official heatwave.

An official heatwave is declared by when temperatures exceed a specific threshold for three consecutive days. However, the threshold varies in different areas of the country.

In London and parts of the South East, the temperature has to go over 28C for three days in a row for those areas to be in heatwave conditions. For the rest of the South East the threshold is lower, at 27C.

And in the South West of England, most of Wales, Northern England, Northern Ireland and Wales, temperatures need to go abovr 25C for three consecutive days.

Manchester, Trafford, Warrington in the North West, plus Rushmoor in Hampshire were the only places in the country where heatwave conditions started yesterday (Sunday).

There are 230 other areas where heatwave conditions are forecast to start today, where temperatures are predicted to go above the local threshold this afternoon.

It comes as amber heat health warnings have been issued across large swathes of England. Areas of the UK are expected to be hotter than Bali in the coming days, with thermometer readings forecast to hit the mid-30s on Tuesday.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued heat health warnings for all of England, with the East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London and the South East having been upgraded to amber, from 9am on Tuesday to 6pm on Wednesday.

The South West, Yorkshire and the Humber, North West and North East have yellow warnings in place over the same period.

The agency has warned of significant impacts across health and social care services due to the high temperatures, including the potential for a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions.
