UK households told to stock up on essential item before end of September

By staff19 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Rural homes often need heating oil as they are based in “off-grid” areas and don’t have access to the main gas network.

Households situated in countryside areas across the UK are being advised to stockpile heating oil ahead of October to dodge winter price surges.

Rural properties frequently rely on heating oil as they’re located in “off-grid” locations without access to the primary gas supply network. Since heating oil doesn’t need connection to a centralised grid, it serves as a perfect solution for countryside homes to warm their properties and can be kept in an appropriate central heating oil storage tank.

The oil functions similarly to gas and electric heating by producing warmth via an oil-fired central heating boiler which then flows through pipework to radiators and underfloor heating systems across the property.

However, energy specialists at Your NRG are encouraging rural property owners to accumulate heating oil for the winter period now to sidestep a spike in costs from October when temperatures tumble, reports the Express.

The independent fuel supplier states that September represents one of the most favourable periods annually to purchase heating oil, with prices generally remaining cheaper before demand escalates during the chillier months.

Your NRG said: “Once temperatures drop and heating oil demand rises, we typically see prices climb. By ordering in September, rural households can benefit from lower rates and avoid the winter price surge.”

“In late autumn and winter, there is more competition for supply as households switch their heating on, and any disruption to production or transport can push prices up further. By ordering early, you have more choice of delivery slots and reduce the risk of paying more per litre.”

It continued: “Buying before the busy period allows you to budget more effectively. It also gives you time to arrange a top-up later in the season if needed, rather than relying on a single large order when prices might be at their highest.”

Prior to making your purchase, specialists suggest conducting several essential inspections initially, such as ensuring your heating oil tank remains in proper working order without any leakage, and that delivery vehicles have unobstructed access routes.

Placing orders in September also prevents families from facing the danger of depleting their heating oil reserves during spells of freezing weather, which may lead to transport disruptions.

The specialists continue: “If bad weather causes delivery delays, having a full tank at the start of the season gives you peace of mind that you can heat your home without interruption.”
