UK households urged to ‘vacuum their gardens’ in September

By staff16 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

The weather is changing, and the record-breaking heatwaves of the summer feel like a distant memory. With the change of weather, the country has been welcomed with a pile of leaves in their gardens.

Experts have unveiled an unexpected tip for UK households to utilise their hoovers in their gardens.

As the weather shifts, the scorching heatwaves of summer seem like a far-off dream. Over the past fortnight, much of the nation has been battered by torrential rain and gale-force winds, causing noticeable changes to our homes and gardens.

One such change is the presence of fallen leaves. Autumn inevitably brings a shower of leaves in your garden.

Whether they’re from your own tree, your neighbour’s or just a random one in your area, you’re bound to find a scattering of leaves in your garden.

While this can create a picturesque golden hue in your outdoor space, damp fallen leaves can also pose a risk. A group of experts has encouraged households to use their vacuum cleaners to rid their garden drains of any leaves to prevent excessive accumulation.

The team at Drain Flow Ltd, a UK-based drain clearance service, have highlighted that hoovering up leaves from your drain is crucial to minimise the potential damage they can cause, reports the Express.

When leaves clog up your drain and start to accumulate, they can obstruct the flow of water that your drainpipes are designed to handle. This can lead to flooding as well as mould and dampness, which can be harmful to your health.

Meanwhile, the damp conditions can create the perfect breeding ground for certain pests, which can be a nightmare to eliminate once they’ve settled in.

To prevent this, experts recommend using a vacuum to remove any accumulation of leaves in your garden drains before they start causing problems. If the build-up isn’t too severe, this will help to avoid such an issue.

It’s crucial to keep a close watch on your drains, as leaves are constantly being blown into your garden. Try to inspect your drains daily, and if you spot a heap of leaves on top of drain covers, take a moment to brush them off.

You should also gather up fallen leaves in your garden to avoid similar problems. Leaves will likely accumulate in your garden throughout Autumn, so now is the moment to tackle this.

It doesn’t require any gardening expertise, but some extra minutes from your day. Trust me, you don’t want a sea of leaves invading your beautiful outdoor spaces!
