UK motorists urged not to drive after 6pm on Friday for important reason

By staff2 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Motorists are being warned not to drive on Friday evening and into Saturday morning as Storm Amy is set to batter the UK with gusts of up to 80mph and torrential rain

Drivers are being advised to stay off the roads if at all possible after 6pm on Friday.

This comes as Storm Amy is expected to pummel Britain, delivering winds of up to 80mph alongside heavy downpours. It means motorists could face exceptionally treacherous conditions on Friday evening and through the night into Saturday morning.

This will be especially true on motorways, which drivers are advised to steer clear of unless their trips are absolutely essential.

Kazimieras Urbonas, motoring expert at European auto parts marketplace Ovoko, said: “The period from Friday 6pm through to Saturday morning will be the most dangerous, with wind speeds expected to reach 70–80mph inland and over 80mph along coastal areas, accompanied by heavy rain and localised flooding.”

“Drivers who delay travel during these peak storm hours are far less likely to suffer accidents or vehicle damage. If your journey isn’t essential, don’t make it. A few hours saved are not worth the risk to yourself and other road users.”

Specialists from the firm provided safety guidance for those who must venture out during the wild weather, reports Birmingham Live. A spokesperson said: “Reduce speed by at least a third in wet conditions, stopping distances double in rain.

“Leave four seconds between you and the vehicle ahead (six seconds in heavy spray). Never use cruise control on wet roads, as it prevents quick reactions to changing conditions.”

“Avoid harsh braking, sharp steering, or rapid acceleration – make all movements smooth and gradual. If you hit standing water, ease off the accelerator and let the car slow naturally without braking. Sudden movements can cause loss of control.”

They added: “Grip the steering wheel firmly at ‘ten and two’. Expect sudden gusts when passing large vehicles, buildings, or gaps in hedges. Make small, steady adjustments rather than over-correcting, which can send you into the opposite lane.”

In other words, if you’re planning to hit the road anytime soon, be aware that after 6pm on Friday might not be as ideal as you might think – unless there’s no other option to get around places.
