UK snow maps reveal five areas face shock SNOW as weather takes Arctic plunge

Parts of Britain could see snow falling in just a few days’ time, according to new weather maps, despite maximum temperatures of 26C being forecast only 48 hours earlier

Snow looks set to fall in parts of Britain this weekend as temperatures tumble in a chilly autumn cold snap.

A new weather map from WXCharts shows flakes falling in five areas of Scotland on Sunday morning, marking some of the most significant snowfall in the UK this side of summer. This will include a number of towns in Argyll and Bute, Sterling, and Perth and Kinross, along with North Ayrshire and Inverclyde.

The north of England and Northern Ireland will meanwhile see some rain, with a drier picture likely to emerge in the south. The impending snow comes despite the return of summer-like conditions on Friday, with parts of the south of England including London tipped to see highs of 25C-26C.

A maximum temperature of 19C is meanwhile forecast in Edinburgh on the same day, 21C in Manchester and Cardiff, and 17C in Belfast.

But the warm spell is not expected to stick around, with daytime temperatures falling to the low-to-mid teens across the UK towards the end of the weekend, dropping into the single figures during the night.

While snow has been known to fall in Scotland in mid-September, milder conditions over recent years have made this less common. Average daytime temperatures for September typically reach around 16C, compared to 19C in England.

Plenty of rain is also forecast this weekend, and the Met Office’s overview for Friday to Sunday reads: “Remaining unsettled into the weekend, with strong winds and spells of rain likely. Warm and humid in the sunnier southeast on Friday, but turning colder for all by Sunday.”

Wetter conditions will stick around for the majority of next week, according to the national forecaster, which writes in its long-range forecast for September 22 to October 1: “Into next week, a northwest-southeast split is most likely.

“The best of drier spells will be in the north and northwest where some fog and frost patches are possible, but there will be spells or rain or showers in south and eastern areas, near to an area of low pressure.

“It will also turn colder, as a northerly flow becomes established for a time. Later in the week, more widely drier and settled conditions could develop as high pressure becomes more influential, although probably still with some coastal showers.

“Temperatures should gradually return closer to average in this period. Later in the period there may be a return to a more changeable pattern but this is uncertain.”
