Huge flurries of snow are set to fall in parts of the UK early next month, with one day in March especially under threat with 10cm set to fall across Northern Ireland, England and Scotland
Brits are set to be deluged with an Arctic blast as 10cm of snow will soon fall in a mad 24 hour period next month.
Advanced weather modelling maps show huge flurries are soon to sweep in and cover several of the UK’s biggest cities. They are set to be heaviest towards the north of the country, although the very south of the country will avoid any snow, according to WXCharts.
Areas of Northern Ireland, Yorkshire and the North East in England and into Scotland will face 10cm of snow fall, bringing nightmare conditions for thousands of people. If as much falls as has been predicted people could experience problems on the roads as well as freezing temperatures, on Wednesday March 5.
The Met Office ’s long range forecast said: “Changeable weather is expected across the UK during this period with Atlantic weather systems spreading in from the west at times. These systems will bring periods of wet and windy weather, with a risk of heavy rain and gales at times.
“ The heaviest rainfall and strongest winds are most likely to affect western and northwestern regions of the UK, with rainfall totals typically lower and winds lighter in the southeast. Between weather systems, some drier and brighter interludes are likely to develop with lighter winds, spells of sunshine and perhaps a few showers. Temperatures are likely to be above average overall, although some short-lived colder spells are possible at times, particularly in the north of the UK.”
The day before will also bring flurries at a rate of around 5cm an hour. The GFS weather model indicates that around midday the worst of the flurries will come in northern regions, although Cardiff and Birmingham can also expect some snow. Manchester , Liverpool , Newcastle , Belfast , Glasgow and Edinburgh all appear to be in the firing line.
Although the snow is then expected to subside, temperatures will remain bitterly cold during that week – likely reaching their lowest on March 7 when the mercury could dip as low as -4C in some areas.
One forecaster has said the return to cold weather will begin around the end of the month. James Madden from Exacta Weather said: “We could see things turning more unsettled and gradually cooler once again.
“In and around February 28th is likely to see a swift reversion back to quite cold conditions for many and an unusually late wintry blast. It will also bring a heightened snow risk of 2-5 days at the very least for some large parts of the UK and Ireland.
“However, our forecasts also expect and have maintained that the cold and wintry weather and/or wintry blast episodes would persist deep into spring in among some mild or very mild weather periods this year. The next wintry blast potential after the current cool-cold and wintry weather moderates from later next week could come around month-end and for in and around February 28, prior to further expected and very late wintry blasts in March and April.”
