Britain faces a battering from fierce winds and torrential downpours later today as dreadful weather continues to plague the nation.

Fresh meteorological data from WXCharts.com reveals a colossal wall of rain sweeping across the UK from the Atlantic Ocean during Sunday morning, 14 September.

The deluge will be accompanied by powerful winds which could hit 70mph in certain areas of the UK.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Stephen Kocher said: “Strong west or southwesterly winds will arrive across coastal areas of southwest England and Wales during Sunday evening, spreading inland and eastwards during Monday morning. Gusts of 45-55mph are expected widely in inland areas, while gusts of 60-70mph are possible at times along exposed coasts and hills.”

The latest charts show vast swathes of the nation drenched in rain throughout Sunday morning, prolonging a wretched weekend of conditions, reports the Express.

Central regions of England are set to bear the brunt of the assault, with Manchester and Birmingham both displaying crimson patches on meteorological data, suggesting up to 10-15mm could fall each hour.

Meanwhile, Scotland is expected to experience substantial rainfall extending as far south as Newcastle, with precious few areas of the country likely to escape considerable deluges.

A Met Office forecast for Sunday said: “A fine start for many but with rain then spreading northeastwards, heavy at times. Turning increasingly windy with gales developing widely across England and Wales into the evening.”

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning due to high winds, set to kick in from 8pm this evening and last until 6pm on Monday.

It cautioned that “strong and gusty winds are likely to cause some disruption to travel and interruptions to power.”

Adding: “Most of England and all of Wales will be affected by strong winds from Sunday evening through to late afternoon on Monday. A yellow weather warning is in place.”

The grim weather is expected to persist into next week, with the Met Office predicting an “unsettled theme.”

A Met Office forecast for Monday to Wednesday reads: “Staying windy for many on Monday with sunny spells and blustery showers, possibly heavy and thundery. Showers and winds gradually easing on Tuesday but turning unsettled again on Wednesday.”
