UK weather maps reveal exact date 20C September heat will return for Brits

September has so far been characterised by a dip in temperatures, heavy rainfall and storms – but Brits are being urged to keep the faith as there is a glint of warm air in the forecast

Temperatures could soon surge back to 20C

Later this month parts of Britain could be basking in 20C heat as a surge of warm air has been seen on the weather charts.

WXCharts’ maps indicate temperatures will start to rise around noon on Saturday, September 20, as autumn looks to be creeping in in many parts of the country. Following an exceptionally hot summer, the transition to autumn may feel particularly harsh for some.

September has so far been characterised by a dip in temperatures, heavy rainfall and storms. However, forecasts are changing and those who enjoy the sun shouldn’t despair just yet. The warm spell will move in from northwestern Europe and bring a final taste of summer, mainly to southern and central England.

Cities including Cambridge, London and Norwich can expect highs of 20C continuing into the evening, before falling to the high teens on September 21, and settling around the monthly average of 17C in the subsequent days.

Last month, the Met Office confirmed that 2025 was the hottest summer on record in the UK, with the mean temperature across the nation, taking into account both daytime peaks and overnight lows, found to be 16.01C. The highest temperature of the summer was recorded in Faversham, Kent, on July 1, reaching a sweltering 35.8C.

The weather experts have forecast generally more unsettled conditions throughout September. Deputy chief meteorologist Tom Crabtree explained: “We are keeping an eye on a deepening area of low-pressure which will develop over the North Atlantic during the coming days and might bring impactful weather to the UK, most likely on Sunday and Monday.

“At present, it’s too early to say the precise impact this might have on the weather, but it’s likely to bring widespread heavy rain and strong winds, most probably to the north of the UK.”

BBC Weather’s outlook for the rest of this week states: “The weekend will be warm but become breezy ahead of a frontal system that will bring showery rain from west to east during Sunday.

“Next week there will be further unsettled weather: Monday will have a mixture of sunshine and sharp showers scattered across the UK, before some more widespread rain moves in later on Tuesday, locally heavy and thundery with blustery winds.

“With more low pressure and frontal systems arriving, there will be further showers or more sustained periods of rain through the second half of the week, some occasionally heavy with a risk of thunderstorms and hail.

“Winds will be strong and gusty at times, and temperatures are going to be rather variable but will most likely fluctuate just above the September average, with no significant cool-down anticipated. Any drier conditions later next week are unlikely to last.”
