UK weather: Nation to be warmer than Tenerife today as Brits enjoy 28C bank holiday

By staff25 August 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

The Met Office says “a good deal of dry and fine weather” is likely today – bank holiday Monday – as a result of a band of high pressure moving across the UK from west

The UK will be hotter than Tenerife today – as Brits can finally enjoy a sunny bank holiday.

The mercury is expected to peak at 28C here and the only showers are anticipated across Northern Ireland. It will be at least 25C widely across the UK, including as far north as County Durham.

Beaches are expected to be busy, particularly the North Sea coastline at the likes of Skegness, Scarborough and Great Yarmouth. It will be warmest across the East of England, with the mercury anticipated to peak in Cambridgeshire this afternoon – a bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

And most of the UK will warmer than the popular tourist island of Tenerife today. Temperatures are likely to only peak at 25C on the Canary Island, to which there were more than six million visits from Brits last year. Its warmest spots today include the tourist destination of Los Cristianos, but even its 25C is no match for the 28C anticipated across the likes of Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire later today.

Met Office’s chief meteorologist Paul Gundersen said: “High pressure over the UK this weekend and into Monday will help to keep any more persistent rain offshore and will bring a good deal of dry, fine and settled weather.

“Cloud amounts are the main variable through the weekend… But temperatures are generally on the rise through the weekend, possibly peaking around 28C in some parts of southern and central England on Monday.”

Due to the high pressure dominant over the UK right now, the Met Office understands “a good deal of dry and fine weather” will continue into the week. However, as the Mirror reported recently, thunderstorms are forecast on Wednesday afternoon for some regions.

The temperatures though, even on Wednesday, are above average for the time of year. The UK will not only be warmer than Tenerife today – but hotter than Barcelona too. The mercury is only expected to peak at 27C in Barcelona, meteorologists with Metdesk say.

“It is going to get warmer, generally getting sunnier as well, so by the time we get to Monday, I think we will see more blue skies generally,” Alex Deakin, meteorologist with the Met Office, said. He also alluded to the remnants of Hurricane Erin, likely to head our way later this week, hence thr storms.

Along the eastern US coast, Erin continues to generate life-threatening rip currents, and rough seas are expected to persist for the next few days, despite the storm remaining well offshore.
