Newbiggin-by-the-Sea is a charming coastal gem in Northumberland, England, boasting some of the most pristine beaches along the North Sea. Touted as Britain’s “cheapest coastal town in Britain” by The Times, homes in Newbiggin average a mere £117,895, an attractive prospect for coast-loving bargain hunters.

The town offers a peaceful getaway even during summer peak times, its natural allure undiscovered by the masses and as such, remains one of the North East’s best-kept secrets. Local microbrewery owner Angie Main lauded the town for its “fantastic” scenery and village-like tranquillity, adding: “It’s quiet, there is space and solitude. But everyone pulls together.

“It’s a proper community, it’s not yet gentrified, and it is very welcoming to new people.”Tourists have echoed Main’s sentiment, praising Newbiggin-by-the-Sea on Trip Advisor for its serene vibe, with the top review reading: “The beaches are lovely and clean, surfers were out for the spring tide, weather lovely.”

Another person commented: “Visited for an evening walk on our way to our holiday cottage. A lovely peaceful place. There were hardly any other people around.”

Newbiggin-by-the-Sea may have a rep for being off the beaten track, but it’s anything but boring. With rock pooling and doggy paddling joy on the south beach that’s even buzzing in the peak of summer, it’s been rated as “Lovely beach, great for rock pooling at low tide. Dog-friendly on the south beach….quiet, even in August.”

But there’s way more to this coastal gem than meets the eye – it’s a hotspot for wild dolphin fans and if you’re lucky, whales, seals, porpoises, and otters might just make an appearance – according to the Newbiggin by the Sea Dolphin Watch Association.

Church Point is the go-to place for some wildlife-spotting action or to simply soak up the endless coast views. Oh, and you can’t miss ‘The Couple’ sculpture – two figures gazing into the horizon, courtesy of artist Sean Henry.

And for those with a keen eye for creativity, the Newbiggin Art Trail is a must-stroll. Just pop open your phone, download the free map, and embark on a journey through tales of over 50 art pieces dotted around town.

Don’t forget to swing by Newbiggin Arts Centre, which not only boasts all local creative goodies but also workshops for every age group and even does you a solid with a cute artsy shop.

For history experts, The Maritime Centre is a steal at just £2.50 for grown-ups and £1.50 for the kiddos, offering up a delve into the town’s past, hands-on fun for little ones, and – check this – a cafe where you can feast your eyes on the view while munching down on some delish grub.

However, a trip to the seaside isn’t complete without indulging in some scrumptious fish and chips. In Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, The Front is the place to be, having bagged the title of Northumberland’s best chippy in 2023.

For those looking to cool down with an ice cream, Caffè Bertorelli is a must-visit. This art deco Italian ice cream parlour serves up homemade ice cream in a variety of flavours, freshly made every day.

They also offer a range of refreshing beverages and a wide selection of sweets.

Regardless of your plans in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, it’s the ideal spot for a day trip, a holiday, or even if you’re thinking about relocating closer to the sea. This charming town has plenty to offer, thanks to its friendly yet tranquil atmosphere.
