A beloved holiday destination in the UK, has been attracting tourists for over 400 years with its claim to ‘some of the best beaches in the country’.
For those seeking a seaside escape within the UK, there’s an abundance of choices. From secluded and stunning beaches perfect for relaxation or strolls, to bustling resorts featuring traditional attractions like amusement arcades, fish and chip shops, and donkey rides, there’s something for everyone.
One town that ticks all these boxes, and has been a tourist favourite since the 1600s, is the country’s oldest seaside resort; Scarborough. Its appeal largely lies in its vast stretch of beautiful coastline and golden beaches.

In contrast, South Bay Beach, the busiest among the area’s four beaches, is known for its soft golden sand and calm waters, making it ideal for swimming. Its proximity to numerous amenities such as restaurants, theatres, and arcades adds to its popularity among visitors.
For those seeking a peaceful day at the beach, Cayton Bay offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of the main beaches. Surrounded by woodland, it “feels very rural”.
Cornelian Bay is the most tranquil of them all, though it’s a bit more difficult to reach – but well worth the effort for the serenity that awaits. Dominating the coastline on a 16-acre headland stands a majestic former medieval Royal castle, now under the care of English Heritage.
Visitors can explore the ruins and ascend the viewing towers for breathtaking views of North Yorkshire.
Another must-see attraction is the Central Tramway, which operates between South Bay and the town centre. Constructed in 1881, this electric cliff railway still retains its original Victorian charm.
Scarborough also boasts Britain’s largest mini railway, located in the North Bay area. This two-mile journey offers stunning views of the coast, Northstead Manor Gardens and the Open Air Theatre.
