People have been urged to check through their change for a new King Charles III coin that could land you a handsome fee, given that it’s believed to have a low mintage
One of the new King Charles III coins sells for “mega money” according to an expert – and you might have one in your wallet or purse.
The 50p coin featuring an Atlantic Salmon was released into circulation towards the end of last year, but it’s thought that not many of them have been minted compared to other coins.
According to @thecoincollectoruk on TikTok, these rare 50ps “are selling for £50 on eBay and Facebook coin collector groups”. This means it is the second most valuable 50p behind the Kew Gardens coin.
The coin expert added: “It’s believed that the [version of the Salmon 50p] in circulation could have a mintage as low as half a million – making it one of the rarest 50p of all time. The hype around this coin keeps getting bigger, and with that the price increases.”
He also speculated that the value of the Atlantic Salmon coin could rise to around £100. However, he said the value could also plummet when the Royal Mint announces the mintage figures, if they turn out to be a lot higher than they are currently rumoured to be. So, if you do find one in your change, you have a decision to make as to whether you’ll cash in now or keep it and hope the value continues to rise.
“Salmon fever is a real thing,” one person commented on the video. Another said: “I just sold 9 of them and have 10 on the way.”
The ultra-rare Kew Gardens 50p was released into circulation in 2009, but only 210,000 were made. The coin was first minted to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the famous London landmark.
The normal version can fetch as much as £250, and there is also a gold-proof version. One of these gold versions recently sold for £7,000 at auction.
