Unqualified doctor ‘kills woman’ after ‘operating on her without anaesthesia’

The son of Sonia Devi, 35, was left horrified after finding his mother bleeding out on the operating table following her admission to Gagan Hospital for gallstone surgery

A woman has died after a rogue medic performed surgery on her without anaesthesia – despite not being qualified to do so.

Investigating officers showed up at the private hospital in India’s Uttar Pradesh state – which was not authorised to conduct surgical procedures – to find it locked and the suspect had fled. Inside, officers found the woman’s body still on the operating table.

Sonia Devi, 35, who had been admitted to the hospital for gallstone surgery, was not under anaesthetic when Mohd Abrar sliced her open, leaving a gaping 11-inch wound on her abdomen. Tragically, the knife wound caused her to bleed out and die at the Gagan Hospital in Thanabhavan, Shamli.

Her husband Deshraj Singh told the Times of India: “My wife was an ASHA health worker (social health worker). She met Abrar, who introduced himself as a doctor. When she consulted him about her gallstones, he assured her it was a minor surgery and asked her to visit his hospital. I believe Abrar wanted to remove my wife’s kidney. A gallstone operation does not require such a large incision”.

Her son Ayush Kumar, who was with her at the hospital, said that he asked the “doctor” to wait for his father to arrive, but “they proceeded with the surgery without informing us”.

“When I entered the operating theatre, I saw my mother lying lifeless,” he added.

The area’s chief medical officer Dr Ashwini Kumar said: “Our team visited the hospital but it was locked. The facility is only registered for inpatient, outpatient and daycare services, with no authorization for surgical procedures. There is no qualified surgeon. A show-cause notice has been issued to Abrar and service provider Dr Areeb Ali Siddiqui, demanding a response within three days”.

Yesterday, it emerged that doctors in India had performed a groundbreaking surgical procedure on a boy who had two extra feet attached to his stomach.

The 17-year-old, who was born with four legs, underwent surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi to remove the additional limbs. The rare and complex procedure was carried out by a team of skilled doctors at the prestigious hospital in the Indian capital.

The teenager had two extra legs attached to his stomach, in addition to his normal lower limbs. The case presented a challenging surgical task, as such a procedure had never been performed at the facility before.
