The film is still gaining new fans – but viewers are being warned that not everyone will be able to handle it.
An unconventional horror flick, described as a film that not all viewers will be able to stomach, is now available for streaming on Netflix.
The Block Island Sound first premiered on the platform in 2021 following a successful run at various film festivals and continues to attract new audiences. The movie recently saw a physical 4K Blu Ray release in certain markets, prompting those unfamiliar with the title to give it a watch on the streaming service.
The plot revolves around a fisherman’s family who face terrifying revelations and dark truths when a sinister force off the coast of Block Island, a real location near Rhode Island, starts decimating wildlife. The suspenseful journey towards uncovering the truth forms the crux of the story. The film was penned and directed by brothers Kevin and Matthew McManus and features Chris Sheffield, known for his roles in The Maze Runner series and Transformers Dark of the Moon, reports the Daily Record.
The Block Island Sound blends elements of horror and science fiction and has been well-received by critics, boasting a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One critic said: “This moody and mysterious horror thriller grabbed my attention and did not let go until the very end.” Another praised the film as “is a visually arresting and genre-defying movie full of intrigue.”
Film buffs have taken to the internet to share their stark warnings to those considering watching the latest chilling horror, indicating it’s not for the faint of heart due to its unorthodox take on terror. Shying away from typical horror tropes, the movie focuses on intense suspense without relying on monsters or bloodshed. One viewer was enraptured, stating: “This film is weird and brilliant. Something different. I was captured from start to finish. Give it a go.”
Someone else advised online: “If you come to see a creature feature and gore, don’t watch this film. If you come for atmosphere and an utterly human experience of the unknowable, this is just the movie for you! The Block Island Sound is slow paced and set inside a family with already strained relationships. They are beset by something out of the pages of Lovecraft.”
Another review commented on the lasting enigma saying: “This film beautifully dealt with its mystery so that even at the end, I’m not convinced I know what really happened. From the start of the film, we are thrown into sound, which gets more unsettling as it doesn’t relent. Almost every scene is seeped in some or other background noise which has the effect of de-realising the whole experience.”
A further appreciative spectator remarked: “Beautifully crafted suspense/mystery/horror that is deeply imbued with subtle influences from David Lynch. Very ominous soundtrack creates a very palpable sense of foreboding. I’m glad the film makers decide to create atmosphere instead of showing violence and gore. Hats off to everyone involved.”
