Craving some much-needed Winter sun, but unsure how to get a good deal on flights? Experts over at Thrifty Traveler have revealed all you need to know about landing the lowest air fares possible
Brits desperate for some winter sun or 2025 getaway have been urged not to fall for this common travel mistake. Booking a flight can sometimes feel like a game of Russian Roulette: Do you book super early in advance and watch with smugness as the price skyrockets for everyone else – or do you risk it and wait for a last-minute deal to magically come your way a week before you set off? The reality is, flight prices are unpredictable and constantly changing. Airlines will have a full team of data analysts and sales experts who will call the shots when it comes to that £60 flight to Ibizia that tripled in price over night. So, how do you find the best deal for flights?
Money-saving experts over at the Thrifty Traveler have debunked the myth that the cheapest day to book a flight is Tuesday. It comes after a Google Flight analysis found there’s negligible savings when you book your flights Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday instead of Saturday or Sunday. There’s no specific day of the week or time that flights are the cheapest to book,” Thrifty Traveler said. “That’s a convenient yet outdated myth that ignores the fact airfare is constantly changing not just daily, but by the hour and even by the minute.”

The pros added that a good bargain can pop up any day of the week, and encouraged travellers to focus on what day they’re actually flying if they want to save money. Luckily, most comparison sites allow you to filter your search by adding the date you want to fly +/- 3 days, or sometimes by viewing the whole month. If you’re pretty flexible as to when you take your holiday – this is by far the best way to get a good deal. Being open to flying at unsociable hours may also help reduce costs.
“Booking flights early can be the key to savings, but sometimes it pays to wait until just a few months (or less) before departure,” the brand explained. “If you have specific travel dates, you should set up a Google Flights Price Alert to get a heads up when the price drops.” Google Flights will show whether your selected flight is ‘typical’ for that particular air fare, overpriced, or under, so it’s a great way to gauge whether it’s worth risking holding out for the price to be lowered.
