Tourists planning a holiday in Venice this year need to be aware of a new charge that has been introduced, and the massive fine they could face if they fail to pay it
If you are planning a trip to Venice for the Easter holidays or during the summer, you need to be aware of a new fee being introduced this week. The access fee for day-trippers visiting the stunning historic centre has been hiked up for those who purchase access less than four days before their visit – it’s gone from around £4.27 to £8.50.
This fee will come in as early as Friday and will affect a large portion of tourists who visit the city of canals. With around 30million visitors per year, authorities are looking to cash in on the tourism trade. Visitors will now have to cough up the new charge daily from 8.30am to 4.00pm throughout April.
From May, the fee will be required from May 1 to 4, and then every Friday to Sunday thereafter. In June and July, visitors will be charged every Friday to Sunday, as well as on June 2.
The number of days the charge applies in 2025 has doubled compared to last year. And the fines from failing to pay the new charge are also expensive. Anyone caught at the designated control points without the necessary documentation could face a fine ranging from €50 to €300 (£42 to £256).
However, there is somewhat of a silver lining. A booking incentive has been introduced for 2025 which allows you to pay a reduced fee of €5, which is about £4.27, provided the payment is made no later than the fourth day (inclusive) before your arrival in Venice.
However, if the payment is made within three days before the access date, the full access fee of €10 (£8.50) will apply.
The fee won’t apply to those only accessing Ponte della Libertà, Stazione Marittima, Isola Nova del Tronchetto, Ponte della Libertà, Piazzale Roma, Santa Lucia Train Station, and the area directly connected to Piazzale Roma and San Basilio Station — as long as they don’t enter the historic city.
It also doesn’t apply to those visiting the minor islands of the Venetian lagoon. And tourists staying in the areas of the historic centre are exempt from the fee as they already pay a tourist tax.
Here’s when visitors will need to cough up the access fee from 8:30 am to 4pm:.
During April every day from 18 until the 30 will be covered by the new charge. In May, the following dates will be covered by the fee – 1-4, 9-11, 16-18, 23-25, 30-31. June will see these dates covered, 1-2, 6-8, 13-15, 20-22, 27-29. While in July, the dates will be 4-6, 11-13, 18-20, and 25-27.
