Emergency services were called to the Lanarkshire country park after people saw the vehicle slide into a loch and eventually sink beneath the water

A man has been charged by police after his car plunged into a body of water at Strathclyde Park, sparking an emergency response and recovery effort on Saturday evening.

The incident occurred around 7.20pm, with videos circulating online showing the silver vehicle slowly disappearing beneath the water’s surface.

One video captures a bystander quipping “excuse me you can’t park there” as the car starts to submerge.

In another clip, the voice behind the camera observes “it’s sinking there” as the front end of the car goes under. Onlookers gathered to watch as only a fraction of the car remained visible before it was completely submerged.

Firefighters and other emergency services rushed to the scene, deploying a small boat to the location where the car had sunk, with plans for its recovery underway.

The busy area, also home to M&D’s amusement park, was filled with people enjoying the hot weather when the car rolled into the loch.

The person who filmed the event posted the footage on Facebook, commenting: “Whoever parked up at Strathy at the beach bit and left their handbrake off, your car’s sank to the bottom of the loch….

“Taking you can’t park there to a whole new level.”
