‘We put a card reader by the bar at our wedding to boost honeymoon fund’

Chris Martin and Tasha White held Britain’s first tap-and-pay wedding reception, with contributions from their 140 guests sent straight to their bank account – funding their dream honeymoon to Mexico

A couple put a contactless card reader next to a bar at their wedding to fund their dream honeymoon.

Chris Martin and Tasha White held Britain’s first tap-and-pay wedding reception, with contributions from their 140 guests sent straight into their bank account. Bosses at Lopay – the country’s cheapest card-processing firm – prepared a QR code for the pair with a sign that joked: ‘Don’t be tight, pay for our flight’.

The couple, who have been together for 14 years, flew off on honeymoon to Mexico the following day using their ground-breaking wedding collection. Chris, 35, who works for Mercedes, said: “Our guests absolutely loved it. I’m not going to reveal how much the total came to, but they were very generous.

“Some of them even tapped more than once. Tasha and I already have a house and everything we need – no one needs another five toasters; what we really wanted was help making our dream honeymoon to Mexico happen,” he added.

“People don’t carry cash anymore so we thought we could have a bit of fun and raise money for our honeymoon at the same time. Card payment processer Lopay costs next to nothing to use, and they helped us with our plan to put one of their card readers by the bar. As you can imagine people got more generous as the drinks started to flow!”

Chris and hairdresser Tasha, 33, who have a daughter aged seven and a son aged three, celebrated their special day at Furtho Manor Farm, Milton Keynes. One guest said: “I think the card reader and QR code were a great idea. No one knows what to really do about wedding gifts nowadays so it’s usually money. This was so much less faff than cash or a bank transfer.”

Richard Carter, 42, boss and founder of card processing firm Lopay, said: “I’m delighted that we at Lopay could help make Chris and Tasha’s wedding day such a success. Having a card reader and the QR code made it so much easier for guests to give the couple a present on the day without any hassle.

“And I’m sure some of them were even more generous after a few glasses of celebration bubbly! Who knows? This could really catch on at wedding venues across the country.”

Lopay is the UK’s lowest cost, highest rated payment app, currently offering no fees on the first £2000. Payment processing starts at 0.79% – half the cost of rivals SumUp, Zettle and Square. There’s no contract and the 0.79% all-in rate can be offset to 0% with use of the free Expense and Reward Card.
