Weed growth can be a persistent issue in the moist conditions of early winter, with the plants threatening to overrun gardens during the festive season and into the New Year
Weeds are causing havoc in gardens as the damp early winter conditions set in, threatening to choke the festive greenery and continue their invasion into the New Year.
Despite all the back-breaking attempts at uprooting, these relentless garden gatecrashers tend to make an unwelcome comeback, as even common remedies like white vinegar don’t quite kill off the roots.
Eco-warrior Lisa Bronner has come to the rescue with her planet-friendly solution for zapping weeds without resorting to nasty chemicals. Heading up the Going Green initiative, Lisa took to Facebook to share her top-notch, no-chemical weed-wiping strategy. In her post, Lisa wrote: “Boiling water is an effective, non-toxic weed killer. Pour boiling water directly onto weeds that pop up through cracks and seams, gravel, or hard-to-reach places.”
She continued: “Use more water on thicker stalks and less on the scrawny ones. Take care carrying the hot kettle and don’t splash your ankles.” The simple yet lethal tactic Lisa advocates involves pouring piping hot water over those pesky plants, effectively cooking them from the inside out, often seeing off the blighters within an hour.
What’s more, the scalding water penetrates down to the roots to help ensure they don’t rear their ugly heads again, reports the Express. Garden lovers are increasingly enjoying ploy that promises precision hits on unwanted green intruders. Yet, caution is the word of the day when wielding that steaming kettle – mishaps could lead to not just burnt weeds but scorched lawns and beloved flowers too.
In the comments section, gardening enthusiasts sang the praises of using boiling hot water to eradicate weeds. One commenter wrote: “I tried this and it worked a treat!” Another chimed in: “I do this! Works like magic on the driveway.” Some particularly stubborn weeds may require multiple douses of boiling hot water to fully kill off the roots.
