A cleaning expert has shared the one simple trick that you can do to ensure that you get the best results when dusting, and it’ll be a game-changer for your household

We all dream of having the cleaning skills of Mrs Hinch, but let’s face it, most of us fall short.

However, one expert has shared her top cloth trick with her followers to prove that achieving a spotless home is possible. Prepping your home for Christmas can seem like a mammoth task, but one clever cleaning guru has shared a tip that will make dusting a breeze.

An expert from Purdy and Figg asked their TikTok followers: “Have you made any of these cleaning mistakes?!” She confessed to making “mistakes” in her cleaning past, but she’d made them “so you don’t have to.”

She says that “everyone seems to make” the same blunders when tidying their homes, with the biggest one being “trying to remove dust with a damp cloth.” She warned: “It just pushes the dust around”, suggesting “using a dry cloth first before cleaning with any products”.

The moisture from the product might just spread the dust across the surface, rather than removing it as intended. Other advice she offered included letting clothes “air dry naturally” or “at least in a large room with lots of airflow.”

She promises they’ll dry faster and “smell so much fresher” – because no one wants musty-smelling clothes. She also warned people to “drain their mops correctly” once they’ve finished cleaning the desired room. If it’s not done properly, you might be left with “watermarks and musty smells”, definitely not something anyone wants around the house.

Some comments came flying in. One person mentioned they just “hoover the dust”. However, another chimed in saying that it’s “quicker with a cloth.”

Yet, another made an important point: “Don’t recommend dry dusting without telling asthmatic people it’s a hazard”, to which the response was appreciative: “Noted! Thanks for bringing this to our attention.”
